I am a sucker for a good story - whether it's in a book, a conversation, on TV, or in a movie. And it's not only the actual events, characters, or plot that make a story "good" - although certainly those are the essence of it. So much also depends on the delivery - how the story is told. Is it well-written? Well-acted? Does it peak my interest and draw me in? Does it make me wonder or ask questions or teach me something new?
I saw The King's Speech a couple of weeks ago and would answer "yes" to all of the above questions in relation to this film. It was educational, entertaining, personal, inspiring . . . yeah, so I kind of liked it ;-) I would even go so far as to say that it was worth the over-priced ten+ bucks that it costs to see a movie in the theater these days. If you're looking for an action-packed movie, this is not going to be your fix. But if you enjoy real-life stories, history, the British royals, or will always love Colin Firth/Mr. Darcy, then chances are you'll put this in the "good movie" category as well.
And Colin Firth better win the Oscar! A truly great performance.
