So today I had the realization that there are often seemingly commonplace experiences that can quickly leave anyone feeling clueless and/or inept.
Example 1: parallel parking. You would think after living in the DC area for four & a half years that I would have this down by now. But if anything is even slightly different/challenging about the space I'm trying to get into, my parking attempts are comical (not to me, you can be sure - but to anyone watching . . .) It's like I have a mental block & revert to middle school insecurity. It's not worth explaining today's parallel parking scene. Let's just say that I was praying that no one was actually witnessing my repeated efforts - at least there weren't cars waiting on me to get out of the street :)
Example 2: the post office. I actually found it entertaining to observe the customers in front of me in line today. I don't know if I've ever seen anyone who actually gets to the post office counter, understands the options, & makes a decisive choice. (I'm sure the waiting-in-line-induced-stupor has nothing to do with this.) As many times as I've utilized the US Postal Service, I usually feel somewhat unprepared & flustered & often leave thinking that I should have chosen a different option that would have cost half as much. Box or envelope? Flat rate or not? Express, 2-day, or standard? Insurance? Confirmation receipt? All those on-the-spot choices seem to leave the average Joe or Jane in a quandary . . . myself included.
Yes, random thoughts . . . just some observations about life in the US of A :)
