back from holiday . . .

Well, I (sadly) returned this weekend from an absolutely fantastic ten-day holiday in England and Ireland, with one of my dearest friends as my travel buddy. How I wish we were still there! A week ago right now I was biking on Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland . . . the sky was blue and the scenery perfectly rugged & picturesque. Sigh.

I'm planning to write several entries about my trip (along with pictures!) over the next week - so many fun things to talk about! Since I'd never been anywhere in Europe before, I found everything to be completely fascinating!!

Today, however, I want to give two thumbs up to the book I brought along to read on our flights:
Beach Music by Pat Conroy. Contrary to how the title might come across, it isn't a trashy beach read ;) Those familiar with Conroy will know that this novel is in keeping with his others - a well-written story that weaves together the complexities, humor, brokenness, joys, & challenges of life - and in particular, of family life. And Conroy writes about the South better than anyone I've read - his words perfectly capturing Southern culture, geography, people, strengths & weaknesses.

(My other favorite book by Conroy is The Water Is Wide; and I just read this week that his long-awaited new novel came out this summer: South of Broad.)
