another favorite thing: Mackinac Island

Maybe it's because for five years near the beginning of August I traveled to Mackinac Island as part of the leadership training we did with students at Taylor.  Or maybe it's because the humidity has been so thick in Northern VA this summer that you can feel it on your skin.  Or maybe it's because I'm sitting at my desk right now in the mood for a good cup of coffee.  Or maybe it's because I've been stalking Craigslist hoping to find a good deal on a used bike (cruiser vs. hybrid - can't decide.)

Or maybe it's all of the above . . . !

Regardless, I've been thinking about Mackinac the past few weeks.  If you've never been to northern Michigan in the summer, it is one of the beautiful spots in our country - absolutely gorgeous along the lake.  And the weather is perfect.  Typically 80s, sunny, with a breeze off the water.  Sigh.  Good memories of relaxing on the island after biking 60 miles the day before (that part doesn't fall under the "favorite things" category ;)  Although I did enjoy the biking - just not so much of it!)

One of my favorite things from those trips is the coffee that my friend Mel introduced me to on Mackinac.  It is definitely one of my favorite coffees ever: the Bay View Blend, which is made for the Bay View B & B.  You can order the coffee (which I have done once or twice) . . . and might have to do so again.

If the forecast for Arlington proves to be accurate, this weekend is supposed to offer a reprieve from the heat & humidity . . . it might even feel a bit like Mackinac (if I close my eyes & pretend!).  Maybe I'll spend some time on the lawn in front of the Netherlands Carillon overlooking the Potomac.  Not quite the same as sitting on the Grassy Knoll looking out at the lake, but . . .

Oh that coffee.....Julianna, that really may be one of the best coffee's out there. I think you can order it on-line...? What's funny is that the past days I've been reflecting a lot on that trip/our staff.... I got to work with some pretty unbelievable people! You one of them.... thankful for you....

Ah, I miss Mackinac, too. I think about it every August, as well, and wish we could all go and just hang out there together for the day. Drink coffee, sample fudge, ride our bikes, talk, pray, etc. Such great memories of a wonderful Taylor tradition.
